Room 6, Photography
• This image of the celestial vault formed by the Milky Way was produced over a period of two years and assembled from fifteen individual photographs. The composition shows the different constellations of the southern hemisphere that ancient Peruvians observed in the skies throughout the year, identifying as they did so features of their own daily lives among the bright stars and the dark patches of the firmament, such as a llama with her young, a shepherd, fox, serpent and toad.
• Over centuries, dark constellations were depicted in Pre-Hispanic art and formed an important component of the mythological tales created to explain the origin and ordering of the world.
