Calvary

Room 6, Vitrine 65

Painted on cloth
Chachapoyas
18th century
Private collection

This cloth painted with a scene from the Calvary, surrounded by symbols from the Passion of Christ, came from the 18 th century Jesuit missions of Chachapoyas, where it served as an object of meditation during Holy Week.

The Jesuits can be seen standing on ladders leaning against the cross, as if they were historical protagonists in the removal of Christ’s body from the cross.

In this piece, the sun and moon appear in the upper part of the composition. Elements of early popular Peruvian art can also be seen, such as retables [carved and painted altarpieces].
